WHY DIY?

NO NEED TO GET AUTHORIZATION. NO NEED TO FOLLOW A SET OF RULES NOT YOUR OWN. NO NEED TO FOLLOW AN INITIATIVE NOT IN LINE WITH YOUR OWN - THIS IS DIY - THE THOUGHT THAT IF YOU HAVE AN IDEA, AND IF YOU HAVE THE DESIRE, IT CAN BE DONE.

IN THE CONTEXT OF CONCERTS DIY STEREOTYPICALLY, BUT NOT ALWAYS, TAKES THE FORM OF BANDS PLAYING IN A BASEMENT. YET HOW HAVE DIY CONCERTS MAINTAINED THEIR VALUE AFTER DECADES OF PRACTICE?

THE VALUE OF DIY SHOWS COMES DOWN TO THE ABILITY TO FOCUS IN ON THE MUSIC, THE EXPERIENCE, AND THE COMMUNITY. WHEN THE MUSIC IS CURATED IN THE DIY SCENE, THERE IS NO NEED TO COBBLE A LINEUP TOGETHER JUST TO ATTRACT A LARGER CROWD. THERE IS NO WORRY ABOUT HOW MUCH MONEY THE ESTABLISHMENT CAN MAKE IN ORDER TO FULFILL OVERHEAD AND STILL MAINTAIN A PROFIT. EFFORT IS REFOCUSED ON SETTING UP A LINEUP OF BANDS THAT WORKS WELL, AN ELEMENT THAT MORE OFTEN LENDS TO A MORE ENJOYABLE SHOW OVERALL. THE EFFORT IS REFOCUSED ON CURATING A SHOW THAT COMMUNITY CAN COME TOGETHER AND INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER, MEET NEW FRIENDS, AND ENJOY GOOD MUSIC.

THE BIGGEST BENEFIT OF DIY SHOWS, THOUGH, IS THE ABILITY TO OPEN UP SHOWS TO PEOPLE NOT OF LEGAL DRINKING AGE. BY THE NATURE OF THE CITY MOST LIVE MUSIC VENUES IN MILWAUKEE AND THE SURROUNDING AREA ARE BARS, AND IF THEY ARE NOT, THEY ARE MEDIUM TO LARGE SIZED CONCERT HALLS. IN TURN THIS MEANS THEY HAVE EITHER AGE RESTRICTIONS OR UNDERAGE SURCHARGES TO MAKE UP FOR THE LOSS IN ALCOHOL SALES. AS A RESULT, THE ABILITY TO SEE LIVE MUSIC WHEN YOU ARE NOT YET 21 YEARS OLD IS DRASTICALLY REDUCED. DIY SHOWS FILL THIS VOID BY BRINGING SOME SHOWS OUT FROM THE BAR SCENE AND INTO ART GALLERIES, ATTICS, BASEMENTS, AND OTHER VIABLE SPOTS. THIS OPENS UP THE POSSIBILITY TO SEE A SHOW EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE NOT LEGALLY ABLE TO SIP ON AN ICE-COLD HAMMS AT YOUR FAVORITE DIVE BAR. DIY SHOWS ALLOW LIVE MUSIC CULTURE TO THRIVE IN AN AGE GROUP THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE DEPRIVED OF THE SOUNDS AND COMMUNITY THAT IT OFFERS.

WHY DIY? IT’S FOR EVERYONE.
